More race opportunities

And still races keep coming.....

Richard Burton 10K

Something a little different to the normal races on offer here. Named after the immortal actor, this 10K takes place in Cwmafan. Scheduled for November 3rd this may be of interest if it doesn't clash with any local racing. Click 'Dicky' to visit the site.

Hay Hillraiser

A cheeky little 11 mile trot on the roads around Hay and its surrounding hills, and a perfect condition tester for those of you who are targeting an autumn half marathon.  As always with a Hay Hotfooters event, the cakes at the end will be divine and the marshals around the course encouraging.

The race is on 1st September, so there’s just enough time to get in a couple of training runs.  The application form is on the Hay website www.hayhotfooters.co.uk or you can enter online at www.runnersworld.co.uk just search for Hay Hill Raiser in the events section.

Marches Family Network

We are pleased to announce that Wye Valleys Runners charity of the year for 2014 will be Marches Family Network. This an amazing charity actively supporting over 170 families in Herefordshire, Shropshire and the surrounding areas providing high quality respite care services for children with disabilities and special needs including Saturday Play Days, Summer Play Schemes and Buddying Services. This charity was nominated in recognition of Sheridan Butterfield's work campaigning for better support for families who have a child with a disability.

30th Anniversary Celebration

Wye Valley Runners celebrating club's 30th anniversary following AGM on Nov 1st. We are looking to compile a montage of old club photographs so that current and former club members can reminisce about the 'good old days'. If you have any photos to contribute please pass onto a committee member and yes you will get them back. More details to be announced in coming weeks

Breinton 10 Mile Road Race Q&A's

Q. Will there be a water station? A Yes the water station will be positioned by entrance to Breinton Village Hall and will be available for runners to use at 2.5 and 7.5miles.
Q. Which side of the road do we use on A438? A. Police have directed that we use the LHS avoiding the need to cross the road. There will be marshals and caution runner signs on this short stretch of road during the race.
Q. Why can we enter the main race on the day of the race but not the County Championships(CC) A. This allows us to allocate a specific series of numbers to male and female CC entries and makes it easier for us to determine cup and medal winners on race day without the need to set up separate registration areas for CC and non CC entrants. If you do enter the CC Wye Valley Runners pay the entry fee.

Harewood Hurtle

If you've been wondering whats happenned to the Harewood Hurtle the hot off the press news from Hereford Couriers is that the race is now scheduled for Oct 13th. I ran this last year and it was well organised and marshaled. Clive Rowberry claimed he couldn't do anything about the torrential downpour at the finish. Excuses, Excuses - no it was a brilliant event just glad I didn't win anything otherwise would have been soaked!!

Notification of 2 forthcoming local races

For anyone worried that there aren't quite enough races scheduled here are details of a further two:

It’s going to be another great day out in Swansea!!.

Swansea Bay 10k

Swansea Bay 10k Sunday 22nd Sept: Based on the level of interest within the club we have booked a 49 seater coach for the eigth consecutive year. We currently have 30 names on the poster on the club notice board so still plenty of space available for those still undecided about the trip.

Wye Valley Runners subsidise the cost of the coach and fees are usually held at £5 per person. This is excellent value..

Following the race we will stop at the Bar Gallois in Port Talbot a very popular venue where we were able to obtain a three course meal for  £13.

The race is a great opportunity to experience a big race atmosphere with a field of 3000/4000 runners including some elite Kenyan runners. The course is flat and fast with last year’s trip recording 13 pbs for the 10k distance.

You can enter the race on line using the Swansea Bay 10k web site. Race fees are £14.50 for affiliated runners and all finishers receieve a T-shirt, medal and sizeable goody bag. Still got some of last years Tres Semme Shampoo & Conditioner.

For the first time I will not be travelling down on the coach because I hope to complete the Gower Olympic Triathlon on the Saturday . If I survive I will join you all for 10k and meal at Bar Gallois. It will be just a very gentle jog around the course for me on Sunday. Ralph Lloyd as kindly offered to help organise the coach in my absence.

It really is a fun event and a great way to get to know other club members. I hear that now Phil Smith is retired we can look forward to a bumper quiz , wouldn’t miss it for the world!!!

Wye Valley Runners 2013 Summer XC League Champions

Click to download Shobdon XC results & final team positionsWye Valley Runners secured the Summer League title last night in what is becoming an increasingly competitive and popular series. James Richards and Becki Davies also won the men's and ladies individual competitions. We also secured many category awards.

The most satisfying aspect of the club performance is the increasing popularity of XC amongst our male and female members of all abilities and there is a really strong and friendly team spirit. Well done to all.

We would like to thank Croft Ambrey for organising the event at Shobdon and the XC league organisers and in particular Mike Blenkinsop and Clive Rowberry for all their hard work.

Shobdon XC details

Click to download Shobdon XC detailsThe final summer cross country is less than a week away.

Wye Valley's lead looks to have assured them the title, and both James Richards and Becky Davies look poised to claim the Male and Female categories.

With that in mind, and to make sure neither lose their way to the event, here are the race details from Mike B....

Please find attached the details for the final race in the 2013 Herefordshire Summer Off Road League to be held at Shobdon on Wed. 24th July.

No postcode has been included as this would direct you up the church drive where you would encounter bollards which would prevent you reaching the car parking area. The venue will, however, be well signed.

The race will be followed, as soon as the results are worked out, by a presentation ceremony at Shobdon Visitor Centre.

Thanks to Richard and Penny Corbett for kindly granting us permission to run on their scenic premises.

See you there,

Mike B.
