Floody Hell that was Close

Some important lessons learned over the last few days, the most important of which is when all seems lost call Les and Dave.

At 9 am on New Year’s Eve, as I walked the riverside towpath, I was totally oblivious to the drama that was about to unfold. Tow path clear, Belvedere Lane clear, Rugby Club and Rowing Club car parks clear. Met a cheery chap driving a mini road sweeper ‘Yes we will soon clear that mess up’ he said pointing to the pile of riverside debris on the entrance to the footpath. ‘I’ve been working along the river for 20 years and I reckon it’s peaked now, you’ll  be okay for tomorrow but you must be crazy to want to run in this’. Well the word of an experienced road sweeper was good enough for me so  web site duly updated ‘Race On’ feet up for the rest of the day.

I started to appreciate the folly of my ways after making a few cursory checks of the river web cam link provided by Alan Lewis . A few phone conversations with Les soon settled me down again, as Les said we’ve got a plan B so were sorted. A little later after watching an Idiots Abroad DVD,  yes I know how to celebrate New Years Eve, I got my first text from Dave who was attending the New Years Eve party at the Rowing Club ‘River has risen 6 steps since we’ve been here!!’ Somewhat later  another text arrived ‘Blokes in waders lighting fireworks’.  Already committed to collecting Kirsty from some strangely named night club in High Town at 1.30am I decided to pop around to the Rowing Club on the way back home. ‘But it’s New Years Eve Grandad’  Kirsty complained, undeterred I met with with Dave and Bousty at the Rowing Club and we proceeded to check the river level from various vantage points around the club, scaring a few courting couples in the process. They must have thought that either we were local wierdo’s or looking for a body in the river. The fact that I was wearing a red jacket didn’t help. We convinced ourselves that the river was at or near it’s peak so a few happy New Years later I was on my way back. Couldn’t resist a peek at Belvedere Lane and found it was flooded up to the top gate. Parking plan B went straight out of the window , no Rugby Club parking for us.

Approached the Rowing Club a few hours later with some trepidation. What a relief we could still get into the Rowing Club although the car park was partly under water.   Les & I  quickly concluded that the water level had peaked after Ian did a top step welly test. Race is still on but plan B quickly became C then D. We quickly agreed location for a new race start and finish, just knew that Duathon route plan would come in useful some day.  Bill and Matt worked on a new parking plan and everything went  like clockwork.. Well not exactly, it was not quite the well oiled machine of previous years a few little things going awry but in the words of Vic Tarrant   ‘Considering the conditions and all the changes you’ve had to make, you couldn’t have put on the race  without great teamwork’.

Many many thanks to the veritable army of volunteers that turn up to marshal for race after race sometimes in very trying circumstances.  Special thanks to all our course  and car parking marshals, to our race registration and results Team, to our finish line team,to our refreshments team, lead and trail bike riders and  to our chairman Harry Franklin for yet again providing superb hand made trophies for our race winners.

The vast majority of runners were very pleased that we were able to put on a race despite the conditions and we would very much like to thank them and the cyclists and pedestrians on the Great Western Way cycle path for their understanding of the situation.

Muddy Woody 2013 entry now closed

We have now reached our entry limit and are unable to accept any further entries.

In deciding the number of runners we have taken into account the limited parking and narrow forest tracks. Although we would love to increase the number of runners, we feel that to do so would spoil the enjoyment for those taking part.
In setting the entry limit we have already made a provision for a number of entrants dropping out before the event. For this reason we do not have a reserve list and will not be able to offer any extra places on the day of the race.
We are sorry for anyone who may be disappointed and hope that if you missed out this year you will get the chance to run next time.

New Year's Day 10K results

Click here for resultsThe weather did its best to disrupt today's event but happily it went ahead under clear skies, although with a minor course alteration, and with 212 starters in was a keenly contested event.

The mens race was closely fought, with Luke Mosely (Hereford Tri Club) narrowly beating out James Richards (Wye Valley) and James Rose (Severn AC) respectively. In the ladies event the honours were taken by Myshola Kirkham (Coventry Godiva). Satu Haikala (Brecon AC) secured the runners up spot, and Niki Morgan (Chepstow) rounded out the placing positions.

In the team competition Wye Valley Runners won the men's competition while Hereford Tri Club clinched the ladies.

Many thanks to all our entrants for their understanding and valued feedback in slightly difficult conditions (best laid plans etc.). Please click the image above for the results, and we hope to see you all again soon!

Best Wishes

New Years Day 10k Towpath Flooding (update)

The race goes ahead with a new start on the Great Western Way bridge at 11.15am. Please be aware that parking is not possible at the Rugby club. Therefore, please use the available public carparks in the area. Apologies for the short notice but mother nature has her own timetable !

The river level as unexpectedly risen again which is making for an interesting New Years Eve for the Wye Valley Runners Committee.

It now seems very likely that the towpath will be flooded tomorrow morning and in this event we will obviously not be able to finish on the towpath as usual. We have a contingency course which will be as  as close to a 10k distance as possible but is not an accurately measured 10K course.

The contingency course will result in a 5-10min walk to the start line via Barton Road/Broomy Hill unless you want to get your feet wet. There may also be some disruption to our results service.

Happy New Year to You All and thanks for your understanding.

New Years Day 10k Race ON

We are very pleased to announce that following this mornings inspection of the area around the Rowing Club the race is still on. The flood waters have dropped significantly overnight and the towpath and car parks are now readily accessible. The river levels are not expected to rise significantly over the next few days. In the unlikely event that there is a dramatic rise in river levels we will alert you on the web site, so please check the web site before you leave for the race tomorrow just in case.

The field next to the Rowing Club is currently under water so will not be available as an overspill car park. The Hereford Rugby Club have very kindly given us permission to use their hard standing car park off Belvedere Lane. This is also clear of flood water although the Rugby pitch itself is fully submerged. We encourage Wye Valley Runners and Marshals and locals who know how to get to this location to use this in the first instance. We plan to use the Rowing Club and Greyfriars parks principally for visiting runners as it will be easier for them to locate and use. Marshals will be available to give directions. All the car parks mentioned are in close proximity to the Rowing Club but please allow extra time for parking and walking to and from your vehicle to the Rowing Club.

For those travelling to the Hereford Rowing Club for the first time it is easy to find us off the main A49. If you are travelling Northbound turn left at traffic lights after crossing river on Greyfriars bridge then first left into Greyfriars Avenue. Southbound turn right at traffic lights as you approach Greyfriars bridge and then first left into Greyfriars Avenue. There will be race signs to direct you accordingly.

The riverside towpath to the race start is very muddy so it's best if family and friends come prepared wearing suitable footwear.

We will accept entries on the day and have already received a record number of race pre-entries so looks like there will be a very strong turn-out.

Wye Valley Runners wish to thank you all for continuing to support this event and look forward to seeing you all on race day.

New Years Day 10k Update

We are continuing to plan for the New Years Day 10k on Tuesday. The river level is high but the towpath, rowing club and car parks are clear and accessible. In the event that there is a sudden rise in river level to the extent that we need to cancel the race we will put out an alert on the website.

This year we will be unable to park vehicles on the field next to the Rowing Club , the ground is saturated. We are planning to park visitors in the Rowing Club car park and the public car park in Greyfriars Avenue which is in close proximity to the Rowing Club. Please allow extra time for parking and walking to and from your vehicle to the Rowing Club.

The riverside towpath to the race start is quite muddy so it's best if family and friends come prepared wearing suitable footwear.

We will accept entries on the day and have already received a record number of race pre-entries so looks like there will be a very strong turn-out.

Wye Valley Runners wish to thank you all for continuing to support this event and look forward to seeing you all on race day.

New Years Day 10k Parking

Many thanks to all those that have already entered the New Years 10k. it looks like there will be a very strong turnout based on the number of pre entries.

Please allow plenty of time for parking. Due to the continual rainfall we will be unable to park any vehicles on the field adjacent to the Rowing Club. There is limited hardstanding parking at the Rowing Club itself so we will need to use the public car park in Greyfriars Avenue and then alternative car parks in close proximity if necessary. Marshals will advise on alternative parking locations on the morning of the race.

We  will continue to monitor the situation on a daily basis and advice if there are any changes.

We look forward to seeing you all and the current forecast is for no rain on race day!!!!!!

FUN Duathlon Results

Well, the weather held for the duration of the event and I think we can safely say that all those involved had a most enjoyable morning.

Strain and stress were not on the agenda as our very relaxed group of competitors took on a 5 mile run followed by a 10 mile bike ride. Gentlemanly agreements were in effect as four entrants crossed the line together to collect their delicious biscuits, supplied by the very talented Becky Davies.

Click the pic on the left to 'embiggen' the results, and the picture on the right for the Flickr feed.

And now a word from our sponsor:

Many thanks to Alan Lewis and Gavin Jones for minding the bikes and timekeeping today. Also to Becky and Lucy for supplying home baked biscuits and mince pies which were quickly devoured at the finish line.
The weather was brilliant for this event and I've had good feedback from everyone that participated, Photo shows us all in good spirits at the start line with just a 5 mile run and 10 mile bike ride separating us from said tempting biscuits and mince pies. Photo album will shortly be posted on Wye Valley Web Site flickr link.

Alan will kindly post event results. Just need to put finishing touches to my fancy dress costume for Wed night!!

Midland XC Championship 2013

The annual Midland XC Championship will be run on January 26th at Stafford Common.

If anyone is interested in participating please speak to Bousty, or use the contact form on our Membership & Contact page, by January 1st (ie New Years Day 10K).

The 2012 event was extremely enjoyable, and I highly recommend tagging along if you haven't been before. Although all levels of ability compete it allows you to experience running against the best the Midlands has to offer.
