So, I was minding my own business a few weeks ago, and came across these guys....
Becki Ansfield raised an issue during the open forum at the AGM for which we would be grateful for some feedback.
Work or family commitments sometimes mean that some club members find it extremely difficult to make the 6.15pm start time. Therefore, Becki suggested a secondary start time for those who can only make a later time during the evening. Another option is a later time on a night which does not currently have a club run.
If you are in a similar position, or would like to just put some further ideas into the hat, please could you use the Contact page to submit your thoughts. The comments will then be collated together so we can take a look at the options.

Traditionally the AGM serves as the perfect forum to present the iclub's awards, and this year was no different.
First up was the the Best Alternative Monday Night Run. Conducted by a show of hands the Bell at Tillington gained a narrow victory over Fownhope, earning Brian Symonds a welcome half dozen bottles of local cider.
Brian stepped up once more to receive the Most Improved Male Runner prize, while Ros Lloyd garnered the Most Improved Female award in absentia. Voted for by their peers within the running club Sarah Bowring and Alan Lewis collected the Female and Male Mighty Oak awards.
Finally, the top 3 in both the ladies and mens Super 8 series received vouchers for Clubsport. The final finishing places in the competition were:
Mens
Ladies
On the weekend of July 5th - 7th next year Wye Valley will once again embark on one of their famous outings. The destination this time is the beautiful Derbyshire Peak District. Early next year the club will have a meeting to discuss the itinery, details, etc. However, if you would like any information before then Jan will happily show you some brochures.
Jan has also kindly sourced a few hotels which are close together and ideally placed for a base of operations. The responsibilty for booking one of the venues lies with the individual and the details are below. Please be aware that due to the popularity of the area you will need to book well in advance of the excursion.
(Click the Hotel name to go to their website)
Bulls Head (01433 620356)
Ye Olde Nags Head (01433 620248)
Further updates will be posted in the new year.
Over the next few days I'll post further information regarding the topics for discussion but the most important piece of information to pass on is that the membership fee will be held at £20 for 2013. If you wish to renew, or are new to the club, please see Dave Sherwood with regard to paying your subscription.
Sunday 11th November will see the next race of the winter XC series, and you all know what that means….
CROFT CASTLE RETURNS!!!!
The attached PDF contains all the relevant information for the event. Those wishing to grab a lift, or are unsure of the directions please by at the Rowing Club for no later than 9 am.
If the current weather holds we may expect mud.. mud.. and more mud. The tea and biscuits will most welcome after this one!
Just a reminder that 2013 locker fees will be £10 and become due on January 1st. Payment should be made to Sue Greenhouse Rowing Club Secretary.
As per last year the Rowing Club will not send letters, but will post reminder notices within the Rowing Club.
Two of our club alumni completed marathons over the previous weekend.
Rebecca Davies took part in the Dartmoor Marathon finishing in a time of 4hr 7mins. Not only a great time, but enough to secure the 2nd senior female placing. An outstanding performance I’m sure you will all agree.
In what seems an ever recurring feeling of déjà vu Paul Watts boarded his own personal National Express again, this week taking in the Preston Marathon. In appalling conditions Paul manage his second best time of the year, finishing in 4hrs 31mins 44secs. He now moves onto 244 completed marathons, with only 6 left to reach 250 the champagne has been put on ice to chill.
The early pacemakers in the handicap series are:
Men: 1. Mike Fawcett, 2 John Pullen 3. Paddy Nugent
Ladies: Kathryn King, 2. Paula McGiven, 3. Sandrine Gorin
Frostbite 5 Handicap Series Race 1 Scores
Selected races are all the Herefordshire Winter League Cross Countries, Mortimer Forest 10, New Years 10k, Muddy Woody 6, Eastnor 7 & Shobdon 6. Club handicaps will be applied to the actual race result and once the handicap results are known 50 pts will be awarded for the first Wye Valley man and lady, 49 for 2nd etc. You only need to complete 5 of the 10 races to qualify, this allows for the fact that a lot of club members will be involved in marshaling and organising 3 of these races. Your 5 best scores will count.
In order to keep things as fair and simple as possible club handicaps are based on 2012 10K’S : NYD, Summer 10k, Swansea Bay and Time Trial performances or your result in first or second XC of the Winter Series.
Thanks to Alan Lewis for all his work on the spreadsheet, no easy task.
Wye Valley Runners
The club AGM will take place on Friday 2nd November and as usual food will be provided Veg and Meat Curry plus chips. We hope to continue the trend of recent years with ever increasing numbers attending the AGM. It’s your opportunity to have a say in the running of the club and an ideal opportunity to meet club members.
Mighty Oak voting slips are available for club members , voting will be coordinated by Michelle Williams.
Wye Valley Runners
For those that like to dress up we are planning another Halloween fancy dress run on the night of Wed 31st Oct. So please come prepared with masks, cobwebs and other scary accessories . We hope to take a few pictures for the new web site.
Old Club Photos
Does anyone have any old club photos that may be worth scanning and placing in the heritage section of the new site. A few group pictures dating back to the Greyfriar’s era are particularly sought after by some of the club stalwarts.
Please contact Mike Shaw or Alan Lewis
We seem to have a large number of lady runners joining the club this Autumn.Whilst trawling through the web site archives getting ready for the switch to the new all singing and dancing site I came across this poem submitted by Carol and Gill last year which may provide you all with some inspiration.
Thanks to you!
It started off on a whim,
It was cheaper than going to the gym.
————————————————–
A new year’s resolution we said,
Walked through the gate full of dread.
——————————————————–
Smiling faces was all that we saw,
Believed we would like it for sure.
—————————————————–
The first run was so tough,
Had we thought it through enough?
———————————————————–
The day after we could not move,
We felt so battered and bruised.
———————————————————–
Give it one more try, we’ll live through it,
So returned with a fighting spirit.
———————————————————–
You encouraged us, you trained us,
You helped us, you raised us,
——————————————————————-
Short strides is what constantly runs in our heads,
When we feel like giving up instead.
—————————————————————–
It picks us up to carry on,
Even when it feels so long.
————————————————————————-
Now we are fitter and healthier than before,
We thought a proper race should be in store.
————————————————————————–
Signed up for Swansea very excited,
With our times recorded we were so delighted,
————————————————————————-
The meal was lovely, the atmosphere electric,
The coach surprisingly comfy, the showers pathetic.
—————————————————————————
The experience so far has been a real ball,
Thank you to one and all.
Love from Gillian & Carol. XX
