Jan’s Cotswold Report
June 28, 2011
Jan Edwards our fitness guru and intrepid Cotswold Relay insider filed this report from outside an unspecified pub in Bath. She was in grave danger of being drowned by several barrels of real ale at the time:
‘ Wye Valley entered 2 teams for this years event, and after making complex transport arrangements everyone got to their start locations on time and nobody got stranded. A few got a bit lost but nothing too serious.
Race day was a lot cooler than last year, with strong winds and heavy rain the night before made the ground soft and a bit muddy in places.
It felt cold at the top of the hills, especially for Malcolm after Dave Sherwood drove back to Hereford with Malc’s clothes. Bousty left his dirty kit in Jan’s car but that was probably deliberate!
Jason and Lucy had the earliest start but they had a motive, to get back to Hereford..for a wild west fancy dress party.
Brian Symonds ran leg 3, his first Cotswold relay, with an impressive performance and Julie Artus on leg 6 is a new runner who has never done a race before, well done ! Chris Motteram was not far behind Bousty on leg 5. Was good to see Simon Oliver back too. Well done Andrew Blackman, his first relay.
All the old faces were there too.. no names mentioned, they know who they are!
Outstanding runs from Claire, Rob Williams, Jim Hicks and Scott .
A few of us followed the relay, driving to the finish/start of some of the legs to support our runners which was good fun but the highlight was watching the finish at Bath, the runners sprinting through the streets of shoppers.
The YMCA was booked and 8 die hard WVR representatives were obliged to stay to celebrate our performances. Bousty and Chris Mason did us proud arranging the accommodation and a great meal at The Salamander, which served good value home made food AND real ales, perfect!!
There were compulsory visits to other hostelries, notably The Old Green Tree to sample local ales and the usual socialising and good humour prevailed!!
Sunday turned out to be the hottest day of the year so far, glad we weren’t running, although Billy Griffiths claimed he was out at 6 am for a run around Bath, but nobody saw him!
Thanks to all who participated and organised everything, a fantastic team effort in every sense..look forward to next year.

Thanks for Supporting Aconbury XC
June 23, 2011
A very big Wye Valley thank you to all the 128 runners and countless marshals that supported the Aconbury XC last night. It was a remarkable turn out.
The men’s race was won by Croft Ambrey’s Stacey Morgan and the ladies by Clara Evans of Hereford & County AC. Wye Valley fielded a total of 25 runners in the race with some notable performances from John Pullen (2nd), Jim Hicks (4th), Mike Fawcett (5th) , Scott Kennedy(6th) and Andrew Noble (7th). Becci Ansfield (63rd)was the first Wye Valley lady home followed by Louise Tanner (87th), Lynn Compton (95th), Lucy Thomas (103rd), Jan Edwards (106th) and Christine Motteram (113rd)
Special thanks to the landowners for allowing access and Mervyn and Paul Bouston for all their hard work preparing and marshalling the course. Harry and Ralph for teas and biscuits. Lisa for taking photos and many apologies I forgot to replace the memory card, it is still wedged in the XD drive of my computer whoops.!!! Michelle for yet again modelling the new Wye Valley hooded top complete with club logo. Emily, Bill, Sue, Gail, Paul Watts, Dave, Les etc etc. Oh yes and also Colin who I spent a good deal of time looking for at the start and then thinking he had got off to the the flyer before finding him at a marshaling point 3 miles in.
Yours truly spent most of the run trying to keep up with Becci Ansfield who finally put paid to any chance of me catching her by accelerating up the final hill.
Please remember to keep your numbers for the next XC they are waterproof.
Thanks again
Mike
