Wye Valley Take On The Suicide 6 – 21.11.10
November 21, 2010

Barry Young, Les Chamberlain and Mike Shaw were the advanced scouting party to assess whether the Suicide 6 would be a suitable event for larger WVR participation next year. The event is held in aid of ‘Action Heart’ in Baggeridge Country Park near Kingswinford , a steady 90 minute drive from Hereford. The park was a former deep mine colliery.
The race is held in scenic parkland, starting from inside a crater shaped dip in the landscape climbing sharply before proceeding along woodland trails , then more steep climbs to the top of the old colliery then down to the lakes with Swans , a waist deep water crossing and a sixty step climb to the finish. Although the course is hilly and demanding it is well within the capability of Wye Valley club members. It is very well marshalled and provided you get there early enough you can park right by the Cafe and get refreshments at your convenience.
The large field of 671 finishers meant that the first mile is quite slow as bottlenecks develop along the trails but after that the going is good. Les and Mike finished together in 60 min’s and Barry (The Wasp) Young finished in a very creditable time of 70min’s given that he had not done any training since Swansea.
All finishers received a very nice quality Suicide 6 Survivor tee- shirt and it was a very enjoyable day out for all concerned. We will certainly be planning another trip next year.

WYEVALLEY RUNNERS 3 PEAKS IN 3 YEARS CHALLENGE

Having enjoyed 2 memorable weekends ‘peak bagging’ Ben Nevis in 2009 and Snowdon in 2010, the remaining challenge for next year is the ascent of Sca Fell Pike in the Western Lake District.
A suitable location has been found and tested, it is a rural idyll called Strands Inn at Nether Wasdale, with a lovely atmosphere, excellent food and its own micro brewery!! (www.strandsinn.co.uk)
Because we wanted to avoid the busy summer time and certain events in the running calendar we have to book well in advance. So I have booked for 9th -11th September next year and reserved several rooms.
Please let me know soon if you want to join us. There are single twin and double rooms available and we don’t need to pay deposits until February.
There is another hotel LowWood Hall nearby (www.lowwoodhall.co.uk) and a camp site and youth hostel.
It is a 4-5 hr drive from Hereford but we can share cars.
I will arrange a meeting in the New Year to discuss and arrange deposits etc.
Contact me ASAP if you are interested or have queries

During the meeting it was decided that St Michael’s Hospice will be the club’s designated charity for 2010/11 and a number of fund raising activities will be taking place during the next twelve months.
The winners of the annual club awards were also announced at the meeting.

John Pullen and Sue Pretty recived the Mighty Oak trophies for their contribution to the club over several years.
In addition, Jon Barnes and Claire Conway were the recipients of the Most Improved Runner trophies as a reward for their individual achievements.
